Ebony

We would like to introduce you to Ebony. Ebony is a three year old black lab that is trained to detect the odor of drugs.

Ebony, was the first full time drug detection dog in Canada to be used as a partner to a School Resource Officer.

Together with Cst. Doug Green the two formed a partnership in the evolution of the Dogs for Drug Free Schools program.

Since 2004, Ebony and Doug have presented to almost 60,000 students, teachers and parents about choices regarding drug use. Ebony is a passive indicator and sits when she finds the odor of illegal drugs. She is also extremely friendly and social and is happy spending time with students of all ages. Ebony is very keen to look for drugs because when she finds them, she is rewarded with a treat. This is both enlightening and entertaining to students who look forward to Ebony’s portion of the presentation.

Ebony created an environment that encouraged students not to bring drugs to school. Her very presence, combined with a positive school based prevention program reduced drug suspensions by over 70% in two years at Ebony’s high school.

The Dogs for Drug Free Schools program was recognized by the Edmonton Public School Board, Edmonton Catholic School Board and Edmonton Community Drug Strategy as having a positive impact in reducing drug incidents in schools.

In 2006 Doug and Ebony retired from the Edmonton Police Service.  Doug is now coordinating the pilot project Canines for Safer Schools in Whitehorse, Yukon.
